Newhall celebrates VE Day

Our school was abuzz with excitement at the start of May as staff and pupils came together to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a vibrant Union Jack-inspired picnic and a host of engaging activities.

As part of the celebrations, children came into school wearing a blend of red, white and blue – a fitting tribute homage to the UK flag – and decorated their classrooms with colourful bunting; pupils also showcased their creativity and designed their own model spitfires!

A highlight of the celebration was an assembly led by Andrew from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Pupils were inspired as they learned about the brave soldiers from Newhall, Swadlincote and South Derbyshire who joined the war effort.

The assembly also took on a personal touch when Andrew shared the story of a young man from Oversetts Road, Newhall – less than half a mile from our school – who fought valiantly during the war.

This story resonated deeply with the children and encouraged them to think about their local history.
