Newhall recognised for excellence in science teaching
We are thrilled to announce that Newhall Junior School has been awarded the prestigious Silver Space Education Quality Mark (SEQM).This esteemed accolade, granted by the European Space Education Resource Office, is designed to support schools in using the fascinating subject of space to inspire and engage pupils in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Schools receive the SEQM when they demonstrate a commitment to using the context of space to significantly enhance their curriculum.
At Newhall, we have undertaken multiple initiatives this year that have sparked a genuine enthusiasm for space among our pupils. In October, we celebrated World Space Week, where our children got hands-on with Martian artefacts, took on real-life astronaut training, and built their own model space capsules.
The excitement continued in November with our annual Astro Camp event for Year 5 students. Spending the night at school, pupils delved into a variety of space-themed activities that allowed them to explore the wonders of the cosmos. They learned about how the rotating Earth creates night and day, created their own galaxy artwork, and even spent the evening stargazing, catching glimpses of stunning constellations.
Alex Brown, STEM Support Programme Manager at STEM Learning, said: “We are delighted to congratulate Newhall Junior School on receiving the SILVER Space Education Quality Mark.
“Each school and college who receives the Space Education Mark has demonstrated a real and ongoing commitment to excellent STEM education in their school. Newhall Junior School is a great example of this.”
Our Acting Head of School, Clare Weaver said: “We are incredibly proud to receive the SILVER Space Education Quality Mark.
“This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and pupils in embracing the wonders of space to enhance our STEM curriculum.
“We look forward to continuing our journey of inspiring young minds through the exciting context of space.”
