Summer Gala Brings Community Together for Freya
On Tuesday 22nd July, Newhall Junior School joined forces with Mercia Academy and Newhall Infant School to host a Summer Gala in support Freya, a Year 3 pupil currently receiving treatment for stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma.Held at Mercia Academy, the event raised over £1,000 to help fund Freya’s specialist care, which isn’t currently available through the NHS. Freya’s story, following her diagnosis in December 2022 and a relapse earlier this year, has touched hearts across our school and the wider community.
The Gala was a joyful and moving occasion. Families enjoyed live music, games, art displays and plenty of sweet treats. The day also marked the finish line of a 70-mile charity bike ride by the South Derbyshire Active Partnership.
A community raffle added to the excitement, with prizes including Alton Towers tickets, a behind-the-scenes experience at Leicester City Football Club, and entry to West Midlands Safari Park – all generously donated by local businesses.
Clare Weaver, Acting Head of School, said:
“We were truly moved by the support shown. It was a special day that reminded us how strong our community is when we come together.”
Nick Holmes, Deputy Headteacher at Mercia Academy, added:
“It was an honour to host the Gala. The atmosphere was full of warmth, and Freya’s story brought everyone closer.”
All proceeds will go towards Freya’s ongoing treatment. To find out more or donate, visit: https://shorturl.at/9rGVX
